Throwing an interception or fumbling the ball is bad. But exactly how much of a negative impact do turnovers have on an entire season?

*Statistics through 11/28/13
The bottom six of the conference all posted a negative turnover margin, while each of the top six earned a positive turnover margin (UC Davis came out even--even though they were 8th best in the nation in terms of holding onto the ball, their defense only forced as many turnovers as their offense lost). Winning the turnover margin in an individual game and throughout the season is a critical measure for success.
Weber State was far and away the worst in the Big Sky in fumbles lost in 2013 with 19, or one fumble lost every 2.5 quarters. This was six more fumbles lost than second-worst Idaho State and Portland State. Southern Utah, under my dad, led the conference with only two fumbles lost. The number of fumbles lost has to come down--and come down by a lot if it is expected to win more games this season.
Here are a few examples of turnovers that are prevalent in college football that must be avoided:
The "DeSean Jackson/Premature Celebration" Fumble:
- It may seem common sense to carry the ball past the goal line before dropping it. But each year in both college and the pros players make the mistake of dropping the ball before reaching the end zone.
The "Stretching for the Pylon" Fumble:
- It's almost instinctual for a ball carrier to stretch for the pylon to break the plane before going out of bounds, but it creates a vulnerable position for the ball to be knocked out before breaking the goal line.
The "Michael Vick 'I'm Too Cool For Ball Security'" Fumble:
The "Backward Pass that Nobody Jumps On" Fumble
- Always jump on a lateraled ball, whether or not you think it was forward.
The "Butt Fumble"
- This...just don't do it.
